Hi, Spiritual Sister!
It is fall, and the leaves are falling! The colors are beautiful, people are assessing their wardrobes to make certain they are ready for the change in weather. I absolutely love journaling, especially in the fall. For me, fall feels like a perfect time to enjoy the weather and soak in a new season! I have many journals, and each journal has its unique style and purpose. Particularly, I love to find seasonal journals, notebooks, and sketchbooks from one of my favorite stores, Five Below. Here, I can purchase quality journals at budget-friendly prices. Occasionally, I purchase from Amazon if I am looking for a specific style.
My purposes for notebooks or sketchbooks include but are not limited to the following: collecting special recipes, creating drawings of Bible scriptures, doodling, reflective writing, and journaling my prayers.
There is something about writing that provides an outlet for thoughts and emotions we tend to hold inside. Additionally, writing records something important that could be forgotten or lost if not passed on via writing, scripting, or printing. Before smartphones, the best family recipes had been written on little scraps of paper. Now, I have formed some of my favorites into a personalized cookbook so I can pass these on to my children.
I love writing prayers because I like to keep a record of my communication with God and how he responded to my personal requests or my requests on other’s behalf. This is an excellent way to keep a record of your victorious wins with God on your side. This also allows you to view how God’s outcomes are better for you than what you try to accomplish without him. He cleans up the mess!
Several years ago, I started writing prayers on little slips of paper and putting them in a decorative box, my prayer box. After some time, I would go back to read the slips of paper and sort them into three piles: The categories are “answered”, “in progress”, or “not yet”. I like reflecting on how the prayers God answered as a reminder of what he can and will do in the future. Sometimes, I had a major worry or concern in the box that I completely forgot was an issue! God had answered the prayer in my favor. It is encouraging and refreshing. Also, this fosters moments of reflection, which motivates me to worship and trust God.
The written word is powerful because it can be read aloud to those who cannot read to educate, instruct, entertain, or inspire. For those who can read, it is a tool they can use for the aforementioned reasons, but learning occurs independently. Written words were especially important when spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ in biblical days. The Gospel was made available in written form and later in print. Because of this and because people were willing to translate the Gospel into different languages, the word of God spread throughout the world.
My hope is that one day my children, children’s children, and generations to come will learn how I prayed, understand why I prayed, and how communication with God, through prayer, changes things. I hope they see how I celebrated and worshiped God in advance, through storms, and even in victory! My prayer is that my children have a unique prayer life of their own and live by God’s precious word. Out of all the things I want to leave my children, the thing I pray they hold to most is their faith.
If journaling, doodling, or writing notes is not a hobby of yours. I dare you to try! It adds value by helping you reflect, detach from a busy life, and reset yourself to remain focused on what’s important. Journaling and writing notes have helped me refocus on my goals, chart my thoughts, and experience growth from the inside out.
Nehemiah 8:1
All the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel.
What words have you read lately or written lately that inspire you? Pick up an encouraging read or guided journal to keep you motivated.
With Love,
Val
