Living in the Moment

Greetings Spiritual Sister,

The month of October is exciting to me for so many reasons. Of course, the season is changing, and fall festivities are in full swing. Still, there are three primary reasons why I love October!

Firstly, the weather is perfect for enjoying the soccer season for this soccer mom! Secondly, my daughter’s birthday is approaching, and planning how we will celebrate this momentous day is a fun process, especially since my daughter is cut from a different cloth. Lastly, I love October because my husband and I went on our first date and fell in love. We like reminiscing about the date and how my cousin helped us connect.

When you are young, you are planning all these milestones. You are goal-setting and making plans. However, I find planning is not always necessary. Sometimes, we miss out on the joy in front of us because we are always thinking ahead. In my younger hustle-and-grind years, I did a lot of planning only to realize most of the plans were not executed the way I had hoped. Actually, they were much better! Therefore, I pulled back on planning and focused more on the daily bread God was giving me. There was much more peace there. I also found more gratitude and began to live in the moment.

Day by day, I became more patient and preferred God to do the heavy lifting. I prayed more and worried less. As long as God gave me the needs for the day, I was satisfied. I learned, as a young mother and career professional, that what I “thought” I wanted could not give me the growth and joy that God wanted for me. I became a better wife, a better mother, a better daughter, a better sister, and a better friend. My desires became God’s desires. I renew my mind every day. Following God is a daily commitment. Sometimes, it is a moment-by-moment commitment.

Often, we do not realize that we inadvertently become the “Lord over our lives.” We try to keep control of things when we aren’t in control of anything. It is a complete waste of time. I got a lot of my precious time back and a lot more joy when I just let it all go. Day by day and piece by piece God unfolds the plans for your life. Stay obedient and maintain a prayer life. It truly looks way better than what you imagined.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

What plans do you believe God has in store for you? Are you being patient and content with not being the "Lord" over your life?

Until next time,

Val
