Purpose in Busy Seasons

Dear Spiritual Sister,

I do not know about you, but when August hits, everyone in the family hits the ground running. Each member of the family has his and her own schedule, and making these schedules mesh is a chore! Help, Lord.

Soccer club season is in full swing for my oldest, so my soccer mom attitude resurfaces. Volleyball season will sneak up on us for my youngest, and the school year has started for the kids. Did I mention the kids have multiple extracurricular activites? Therefore, we are gearing up for that as well and praying over how schedules will mesh. We also will be celebrating my son’s birthday this month, so we have to make plans for that as well. Exciting things are happening!

I have had to lean on other mothers who navigated these schedules before me. Managing multiple kids in multiple activities is not for the weak. My parents made this look easy when my brother and I were kids.

As if school and kids’ schedules are not enough, my husband and I have to operate our nonprofit and engage in other activities such as being in community organizations and working full-time jobs. After all that, each of us stilll need our “me time”. Intentionality and time management accompany such a busy schedule. I do not always get it right, but together, my husband and I make it work. We also have joy doing it. As long as the family unit is happy and healthy, that’s all that matters.

In times when I get super busy or start to feel overwhelmed, I read about the wife of noble character in the Bible. I continue to read this passage over and over again because this “sista” has it together! If you carefully analyze each line, this virtuous woman has her house in order, her kids in order, runs her businesses, has a heart of giving, and her husband lacks nothing. Talk about goals!

As I read this passage God provides a perfect example of how women should live out their purpose as wives and mothers. Also, I remind myself that I have to give myself grace. It is okay if a kid misses a practice or if we have to buy dinner a couple more times than desired in a week. However, as long as each member of my family is in good spiritual health, all is well. For good spiritual health and God’s protection, I am thankful.

Yes, we make plans, and our lives get busy. Still, we can never forget our purpose and who sustains us. Even in a busy season, it is okay if the plan changes. However, never forget your purpose. God placed me here to be a light that reflects his goodness in my roles as a wife, mother, sister, friend, daughter, aunt, volunteer, business owner, career professional, and most importantly, as a child of God. As long as God gives me air in my lungs and provides me with my daily bread to do his will, that is fine with me. I have all I need, and you do, too.

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”

Proverbs 31: 25

If you haven’t started laughing yet, Spiritual Sister, it is a good time to start. A busy, uncharted season could be ahead.

Sincerely,

Val
