Happy Winter, Spiritual Sister!
So much is special about a new year! We get another chance to create the change we have been longing to see in ourselves. In 2024, about 3 of 10 Americans reported they made at least one New Year’s resolution. Well, what is the number 1 resolution? You guessed it. It is related to healthier lifestyle habits and weight loss. Other resolutions are related to financial goals, new career moves, or other aspects that people feel are important for their growth.
Years ago, I made New Year’s resolutions, but not much changed. Research supports that many people lose traction with their resolutions after a couple of months into the new year. I am guilty of being in this number. After growing older, I stopped waiting for New Year’s Day to make changes. I simply started praying more and asking God to help me do it his way on his time.
In the past when I have made resolutions about healthier eating habits my way, I would get great results. However, they would not last. Soon, my schedule would interfere. Juggling my work, my husband’s work, my kids’ schooling, my kids’ activities, family time, my “me time”, and all the other things that go with being a mom, wife, and career professional just simply got in the way. Until I gave it all to the Lord, I realized it became so much easier. While my intentions were always good, I wanted fast results and worked on my timeline. However, life will teach you patience. Slow and steady has been more my flow, and the results last. It works!
Instead of focusing so much on myself, I simply started meditating on God’s word more. Renewal is more about the inner work in you, not so much the time of year. Each day is an opportunity to renew your mind, and all the other things you desire will eventually become what God desires for you instead.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:2 NIV
Spiritual sister, I urge you to keep going. Anything that would add value to you adds value to those who encounter you. Take time for some winter renewal. If your mind and heart are truly renewed, your behavior will reflect this. With that said, I pray you let God lead your path and have an open mind about it. Self-discipline is a form of obedience. Obedience to God is key!
If you want to get started with renewal, download this free 3-day devotional, Renewed: Time to Transform.
